Seychelles’ biodiversity to be documented using CyberTracker |14 February 2014

Two groups of animal and plant data collectors from key environmental institutions have followed two two-day courses on the use of advanced data collecting technology called CyberTracker.

The aim was to help these individuals who are from the Ministry of Environment and Energy as well as environmental non-governmental organisations, to become more proficient in electronic field data collection.

The workshop was held at the Care House and also included field practice at the Morne Seychellois National Park.

CyberTracker is a freely available software provided and maintained by the CyberTracker Conservation, a non-profit organisation that is committed to promoting the vision of a worldwide environmental monitoring network.

Consultants Dr Christopher Kaiser-Bunbury and Dr Bruno Senterre led the training sessions.

The workshops have been organised by the Government of Seychelles, United Nations Development Programme, Global Environmental Facility (GOS/UNDP/GEF) programme coordination unit.

Under the project entitled Mainstreaming biodiversity management into production sector activities carried out by the GOS/UNDP/GEF, a consultancy is being done to identify and assess priority biodiversity sites in the terrestrial areas of the granitic islands of Seychelles. The consultancy is the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) project.

To improve and streamline empirical data collection and management, a second consultancy, the KBA-CyberTracker project has been initiated to develop an electronic data capturing system, which is fully compatible with the databases established as part of the KBA project.

The training is the final stage of the KBA-CyberTracker consultancy.
