R40,000 donation to help less fortunate students |19 February 2014

The managers of ‘Pegasus Yacht’, a cruise boat belonging to the ‘Variety Cruises’ based in Greece, have donated a cheque for R40,000 to the ‘Archbishop Makarios Scholarship Fund’.

The Fund, which is administered and managed through a Board of Trustees headed by the Judiciary of Seychelles, gives bursaries to the less fortunate school children in Seychelles.

The latest donation was handed over to the chairman of the Fund, Justice Durai Karunakaran, by Captain Nikolaos Binieris, who was accompanied by engineer Alexander Muskaj.

The ceremony took place in the Chief Justice’s conference room at the Supreme Court of Seychelles, Palais de Justice at Ile du Port.

“We, the members of the Board, are very happy, honoured and grateful to ‘Variety Cruises’ for their generous donation,” said Justice Karunakaran on receiving the cheque.

“The money will be put to good use in the promotion of education in Seychelles and to improve the welfare of Seychellois students who are less fortunate,” he said.

“The welfare of our children occupies the centre of our national agenda and is number one priority for the government and people of Seychelles, as the children are our treasure and future,” added the chairman.

Present at the ceremony were the members of the Board of Trustees of the Fund -- Bishop French Chang-Him of the Anglican Church, Fr. Edwin Mathiot of the Catholic Church and the secretary Stella Napier.

Also there was Mr Tasos, the honorary consul of Cyprus to Seychelles, who was very instrumental in organising for the donation.

The ‘Pegasus Yacht’, which was in Port Victoria for the day on one of its cruises around the islands, left the port on the same day in the evening for another destination.

Apart from developing eco-tourism, the ‘Variety Cruises’ group is also involved in educational projects such as this one.
