Mangrove Action Project (Map) |20 February 2014

Winners of art contest rewarded

Local winners of a worldwide art contest for children, the Mangrove Action Project (Map) Children’s Art Contest, have received their prizes.

Nahila Volcère from Belonie secondary school clinched the first prize, followed in second place by Nathalie Desaubin from Au Cap primary school while Stephanie Dubel from Perseverance school accepted the third prize.

The prizes have been sponsored by the Environment Education Unit of the Ministry of Education, the Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles and Mangroves for the Future. The three winners also received a certificate and a copy of the Map 2014 calendar.

Calendars were also given out to the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Education, the Seychelles National Parks Authority, Global Vision International (GVI), Mangroves for the Future, Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles and the Seychelles Tourism Board.

The prize-giving ceremony, which took place at the Ministry of Environment and Energy’s headquarters, also served as the official launch of the 2015 Map art contest.

Explaining the origin of the contest, GVI country director Chris Mason Parker said it is an American contest launched worldwide by Map for students aged between 9 -14 years. GVI, in collaboration with the Seychelles National Parks Authority and the Ministry of Education, then launched the competition in local schools on behalf of Map. The entries were then collected and sent to Map in the United States where the winners were picked.

Mr Mason Parker thanked students who took part last year and encouraged contestants to come forth this year to continue promoting awareness of the environment and contributing towards sustainable use and conservation of mangroves for future generations.
