PUC completes major water project |26 February 2014

A major project initiated last year to carry water from three rivers to the La Gogue dam has been completed, the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) has announced.

Project director Ravin Sunassee gave an update on the project yesterday at the Electricity House, Roche Caïman.

The project involves the construction of three barrages at Rhodas, Le Niol and Mount Simpson rivers, a 200m cube water tank and the laying of approximately 8km of pipeline.

Mr Sunassee said the project entailed carrying water from the three rivers which is then taken into a newly constructed tank at Rhodas then flowed into the La Gogue dam.

He said the project had a six to eight-month delay due to several reasons of which one was the first contractor’s low quality of work.

He added that the contractor had taken a lot more time to complete the project and PUC had to step in to remedy the defects from the work which had been completed then.

PUC then terminated their contract and gave the project to another contractor to complete the work.

The project has cost around R37 million and its main aim is to increase the volume of water entering the La Gogue dam.

Mr Sunassee has expressed words of thanks to members of the public who have given their support and cooperation.
