Network engineers to set up IXPs |26 February 2014

Network engineers from telecommunication and internet sectors are since Monday attending a workshop designed to teach them the technical and administrative skills needed to set up, operate, and administer an Internet Exchange Points (lXPs).

The technical aspect capacity building workshop from February 24-28 is being organised by the African Union in partnership with the Department of Information Communication and Technology, and the Internet Society. It is being held at the Care House and its aim is to support the establishment of lXPs in Seychelles.

Spanned over five days, the workshop is part of the African Union Commission (AUC) African Internet Exchange System (Axis) project to support the establishment of lXPs across Africa.

The Axis project aims at keeping Africa's local internet traffic local to the continent by providing capacity building and technical help to ease the establishment of IXPs in Africa. As countries establish their own IXPs, local Internet traffic will be routed locally, creating downward pressure on costs and as a result stimulating growth and distribution of local internet content.

It is expected at the end of the workshop that a requisite local technical expertise is created to support the IXP interconnections and operations.

This is why the training employs a hands-on lab for those taking part to practice and familiarise themselves with the technology and techniques to be deployed on their networks and at the IXP.

The technical aspects workshop builds on the success of the best practice event that was held at Le Méridien Barbarons Resort from July 2-23, 2013, where a stakeholder task force was formed to oversee the IXP implementation.

The AUC has 54 member states and its vision is a peaceful, integrated, prosperous Africa, driven by its own citizens to take up its rightful place in the global community.

As for the Internet Society, it is the trusted independent source for internet information and thought leadership from around the world. With its principled vision and substantial technological foundation, the Internet Society promotes open dialogue on internet policy, technology, and future development among users, companies, governments, and other organisations.

Working with its members and chapters around the world, the Internet Society enables the continued evolution and growth of the internet for everyone.
