Leroy Jeanne receives international arts award |27 February 2014

Leroy Jeanne, a secondary three student of Pointe Larue school, has been rewarded after taking part in the 41st International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Arts Lidice (ICEFA Lidice).

The exhibition was founded in 1967 to mark the child victims from the Czech village of Lidice murdered by German Nazis, as well as all other children who have died in wars.

Attending the short award presentation ceremony at the Pointe Larue secondary school were deputy head of mission of the embassy of the Czech Republic based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Václav Kuželka, representatives from the Ministry of Education, head of the school Jina Labiche, teachers and students.

Congratulating Leroy, Mrs Labiche urged other students to use Leroy’s achievement as an encouragement which will lead to many more of them taking part in the competition in the future.

Leroy’s drawing was based on the theme ‘My traditional village’ and his work was among the 24,485 entries received from 68 countries.

He thanked Mr Kuželka for presenting him with the award and his father for being an inspiration.

ICEFA Lidice is a one-round competition for children four to 16 years for all types of schools and organisations working with children.

The works are awarded Honourable Mentions and the best of them obtain Rose of Lidice medals.

Mr Kuželka is on a two-day visit to Seychelles.
