Tanzania celebrates Golden Jubilee |25 April 2014

Designated Minister Meriton to represent Seychelles

Designated Minister Vincent Meriton will be representing President James Michel at the 50th anniversary of the union between the Republic of Tanganyika and the People’s Republic of Zanzibar to take place in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

The union between the Republic of Tanganyika and the People's Republic of Zanzibar gave birth to the United Republic of Tanzania.

The commemorative festivities on Saturday April 26, 2014 will highlight Tanzania’s culture and tourism. There will be cultural and art display, traditional dances, fashion display, food tasting and many more.

The anniversary coincides with the constitution making process which is expected to be completed this month.

After the United Republic of Tanzania was formed in 1964, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere became the first President of the new Republic, and the late Sheikh Abeid Karume, then the President of Zanzibar, became the first Vice-President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council.

The late Rashidi Mfaume Kawawa became the second Vice-President in charge of government business in the National Assembly.

The history of the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar is undoubtedly unique. These two states agreed to unite for the benefit of their citizens.
