38th annual Inter-School Athletics Championships |11 July 2014

La Digue awaits best primary cup

La Digue school is said to be the winner of the best primary school title of the 38th annual Inter-School Athletics Championships and not Anse Royale as announced on June 29 – the day the event took place at Stad Linite.

Speaking to Sports Nation, Selby Dora of the Ministry of Education said: “After every championship, we review the data internally and await any appeal. This year, we received just one appeal in writing from the La Digue school. After verification, three schools – La Digue, La Rosière and Anse Royale – which could be affected by the final results were called in. After the meeting, the schools were asked to go back and re-check their own data and prepare counter-appeal if they believe there should be. They have one week to do so. It’s only after the one-week period that the ministry will make a formal announcement on the changes that have come out of the review.”

Mr Dora added that although it is not an ideal situation to get schools to hand back the cups after the results have already been announced he understands that the statisticians can make mistakes as they work with a lot of figures and under a lot of pressure on the day of the championship.

Anse Royale had been declared the winner of the best primary cup with 104 points – two points better off than Anse Boileau while last year’s winner La Rosière finished in fourth position. La Digue was placed third with 100 points.

Meanwhile, La Rosière is said to be the joint winner with Anse Royale of the girls’ under-12 category.
Originally, the cup was given to La Rosière with 33 points and Anse Royale was placed second with 31.
