Education - Ministry condemns acts of disrespect by students |31 July 2014

The Ministry of Education has reiterated that it condemns and does not tolerate any act of disrespect by students towards teachers and any other member of staff.

This follows two incidents in less than a week at the Anse Boileau seconday school where two teachers had been victims of students’ unruly behaviour.
In the latest incident which occurred on Tuesday, a student attacked a female teacher, who was hurt in the mouth.

According to police report the teacher was treated at the hospital and then released.

In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Education said it is conducting an investigation in this incident.

“Information is being gathered by ministry officials since (Tuesday) in collaboration with the school management as per the set internal procedure for such incidents. The matter has also been referred to the police,” said the ministry’s statement.

The statement added that the Minister for Education yesterday met all parties concerned including the teacher, the student and his parent, at the school.

Before the start of the school day yesterday morning, ministry officials met all the teachers and reassured them of the ministry’s support, said the statement.

In the first incident which occurred last week at the same school, some students tried to strangle another teacher.
The ministry has said that disciplinary actions will be taken in both cases against the students concerned.

The Ministry of Education has also confirmed that there was no incident that occured yesterday at the school involving students and the headteacher of Anse Boileau secondary school.
