'Pleasing first IGCSE results at Vijay International School’ |20 August 2014

Results for the first ever IGCSE entries at the Vijay International School Praslin have been described as “very encouraging” by the school’s management.

Twelve students from Year 11 (S5) sat for an average of nine subjects, with Year 10 students (S4) taking one or two subjects early as part of the school's entry policy.

Overall the students recorded a 100% pass rate, with 43% of all grades recorded at A*, A and B. Higher passes (C and above) made up 62% of the total.

Top performers were Megan Esther, Hayley Figaro and Emmanuel Morel who secured eight higher passes each, and Wendy Pointe who gained seven.

The school was awarded examination centre by Cambridge International Examinations following a successful inspection by the Cambridge inspectorate in January 2013, since when a significant number of the school's secondary teachers have been appointed as Cambridge examiners, a positive consequence both in terms of staff professional development and the fact that examiner experience informs successful teaching and better student outcomes.

Greg O'Dowd, the school's head of secondary section, described the results as “very encouraging” and went on to say “it's always tough to be the first cohort and I think that our Year 11 students can feel satisfied with how they coped with being examination 'pioneers”.

Martin Kennedy, the school's head teacher, said that the results reinforce the school's decision – taken recently -- to begin to teach A levels next year.

“This is a logical step forward, and provides an opportunity for students from Praslin and La Digue to continue their education while remaining in a supportive home environment,” he said.

The school plans to offer up to 10 A level subjects subject to demand.
