Healthy eating training on Praslin |23 August 2014

Tuck shop operators, head teachers, teachers and school dental therapists on Praslin and La Digue have this week followed a training workshop on healthy eating.

Organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the training is part of efforts to reinforce the implementation of the National School Nutrition Policy.

The workshop took place in the conference room of the Pension Fund complex at Grand Anse Praslin and those who took part learned how to prepare healthy snacks as guided by the School Nutrition Policy.

The training is very crucial as it aims to improve the general health and well-being of students and staff as well as strengthen the link between health and education.

Another important component of the training was to educate the school community about the health promoting schools (HPS) concept, which will be established in all state schools in Seychelles as from next year.

The HPS concept is an internationally recognised framework aimed at improving the health and well-being of school communities. It adopts a whole school approach to address issues that may create barriers to learning and achievements and guides schools in developing strategies and actions to address these barriers.

Each school has identified a HPS leader whose roles are to:

•    Initiate the early stages of the HPS,

•    Ensure full and ongoing commitment of the school,

•    Provide leadership to the HPS working group (when set up).

Today, there will be practical cooking session at Pam’s Catering Services (school meal kitchen) at Baie Ste Anne Praslin from 9am to 3pm. The cooking session will also be attended by Miss Seychelles … Another World Camilla Estico and she will use the opportunity to promote her obesity project.
