Table Tennis: Monthly challenge |23 September 2014

Sultan, Robert retain titles

Godfrey Sultan and Lana Robert are the winners of the September monthly challenge, retaining the titles they won in August. Emma Bristol and Dylan Simeon won for the girls’ and boys’ second division respectively.

The competition was played on Sunday at the Omnisports Gym, Roche Caïman.
Sultan had won the competition in August by beating Nicholas Esther, but this time he faced a different opponent in the shape of Mario Lablache.

It proved to be an easier contest for Sultan who won the match 4-0. Lablache kept it close in the early stages but Sultan won the first set 11-9, before taking the second 11-7. The third set saw Sultan take a big 11-1 win, before he killed off the contest with an 11-7 fourth-set victory.

Third place went to Mick Créa.
In the women’s division one, August winner Lana Robert retained her title by claiming a hard fought 4-2 win against Zahira Khattab in Sunday’s final.

Robert actually lost the first set 9-11, before bouncing back to claim an 11-7 second-set win. She continued to play well in the third set for an 11-5 win and despite her opponent putting on a fight in the fourth set, Robert managed to claim it on a 12-10 score for a 3-1 lead.

Khattab continued to fight on despite being behind and she won the fifth set on a 12-10 score. In the sixth set though, it was Robert who finally grabbed the win, winning it 11-9 and the game 4-2.

Kim Hoareau finished the competition in third position.
In the girls’ division two, Emma Bristol once again won the final and for once more it was Fatima Boniface who was at the end of a 3-0 defeat. Bristol won the three sets fairly easily – 11-5, 11-7, and 11-5. Third place went to Juliette Jupiter.

Dylan Simeon was also able to defend his title won in August as he claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory over last month’s finalist Mael Youpa. It was Simeon who started the match on the back foot however, as he found himself behind early on, losing the first two sets 7-11 and 12-14.

He remained determined though and managed to turn things around to go on to win the next three sets 11-8, 11-9 and 11-6 to claim the win.
