Congratulations winners, enjoy the UB40 show! |18 October 2014

Congratulations to all 25 winners who won a ticket for today’s UB40 show on the occasion of the grand opening of the Eden Bleu Hotel.

Now that you all have your tickets in your possession, you should not miss the show and we hope you have a nice time!

The 25 winners are Rose-Marie Juliette, Anthony Saldanha, Linda Zarine, Sophia Lespoir, Raymond Damou, Patricia Payette, Fara Mathiot, Jeanny Pool, Sylvanne Ernesta, Marilyn Port-Louis, Micheline Ferley, Rachel Desir, Gilberte Hoareau, Philomene Lucas, Guy Benstrong, Hubert Bouchereau, Florence Didon, Marievonne Iman, Wilianna Rose, Daryl Padayachy, John Betsy, Dammy Payette, Simone Montano, Kevin Bibi and Nicholas Figaro.

To win a ticket for the show readers only had to fill in a form published in the Monday October 13, 2014 issue of the Seychelles Nation newspaper.

Altogether 500 accredited members of the public who have succeeded in winning various competitions as well as invited guests will watch the concert. South African musician Jeremy Loops, a one-man modern folk band, will be opening for UB40 in today’s concert.

Meanwhile, all attempts by the Seychelles Nation newspaper to have an interview with the UB40 band did not materialise.

This is the second time the British reggae/pop band comes to Seychelles for a concert.

Formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England, the band first performed here on Saturday July 28, 1990 at Stad Popiler but the sound system failed four times in two hours and five minutes of playing.

The organisers said a bottle of mineral water which was accidentally knocked over and spilled into the music mixer spoiled UB40’s concert in Seychelles – their last stop of an 18-month world tour.

Three of the band’s eight musicians – saxophonist Brian Travers, drummer James Brown as well as toaster and vocalist Terrence Wilson (better known as Astro) – were also deported after police found cannabis in their rooms at the Beau Vallon Bay and Reef hotels.

Since the last concert was just over 24 years ago, many fans wanted to see the band live but could not as tickets were not on sale.

Eden Island executive chairman Craig Heeger said they had hoped to hold a public event at the Stad Linite this weekend but have been unable to do so due to the concert commitment of the band.

But he had words of encouragement for the fans, saying “I am delighted to announce that Eden Island has contracted the band to return to Seychelles in late June 2015 to celebrate the first anniversary of the unification of the National days, the 39th anniversary of Independence.”

“I promise to make the return of UB40 in June 2015 a memorable and affordable event for all Seychellois,” added Mr Heeger.
