A taste of Sids |18 October 2014

From the start of the year, schools across the country have adopted various small island developing states (Sids), where they have represented these nations in various ways.

The latest was a traditional dish competition, held at Orion Mall yesterday, where schools presented various dishes from the respective countries they are representing.

A variety of dishes made from traditional ingredients were presented by the students, which showed how much effort they put into researching the recipes for the exhibition.

A representative from Belonie secondary school, who were presenting dishes from the Island of Fiji, said that they retained the traditional theme during their research as rather than using the more conventional internet, they used books as the means for their research.

New Caledonia was represented by the English River school, whose research was more personal as one of its teachers visited the island and came back with the recipe which they presented at the exhibition.

Speaking to Seychelles Nation, the environment education coordinator for the Ministry of Education, Jeanette Larue, said that the aim of the exhibition was to get the schools to continue showcasing the different aspects of the Sids in line with the theme for this year.

“We also chose to hold this competition as it coincides with the World Food Day celebrations,” added Ms Larue.

“In November, we will be having another of these exhibitions, whereby this time there will be a fashion show to showcase the traditional outfits of these small island states,” she added.

She said she was pleased with the schools’ involvement, as they have really put a lot of effort into it and the exhibition attracted a large number of members of the public along with tourists.
