STC opens bigger supermarket on La Digue |18 October 2014

The Seychelles Trading Company Ltd (STC) has opened a much bigger supermarket at Anse Reunion on La Digue.

As a result, the company’s smaller supermarket that was opened in February this year at La Passe is now closed and will be turned into a showroom for construction materials.

Situated in the Gregoire’s Complex, the new supermarket is occupying the same area of the then Gregoire’s Complex supermarket which has ceased to operate.
After receiving feedback from Diguois complaining about limited space in the La Passe supermarket, STC had found it wise to rent out the area in the Gregoire’s Complex in a bid to make available to the La Digue community the same quantity of products that were available only on Mahé. This was made possible through cordial cooperation between the Complex’s owner Gregoire Payet and the STC.

Present to witness the cutting of the ribbon by STC’s chief executive Veronique Laporte and Mr Payet to officially open the supermarket  were La Digue’s district administrator Barbara Barallon, State House representative Michel Marie, STC board members and staff, other guests, customers  and visitors on La Digue.

Working tirelessly the night before and throughout yesterday morning, the supermarket manager Valentin Adrinne and his 30-strong staff had with the help of some STC staff from Mahé and Praslin stacked the shelves with household items, healthy products, cleaning materials and detergents, frozen goods, party items, wines and spirits, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, to name a few.

The supermarket also has a gift corner.

Addressing the guests, Ms Laporte thanked Mr Payet for his cooperation and assured the Diguois that with the bigger supermarket more products will be made available.

She called on farmers and other small business retailers on La Digue who wish to have their products on sale in the supermarket to come forward and meet the supermarket management for discussions.

As the former supermarket at La Passe will be turned into a construction material showroom, Miss Laporte said “customers will be able to order their materials from the showroom which will later be shipped to La Digue and we will later introduce a service whereby a customer can also make arrangements to ship other materials that we don’t sell such as cement along with what they have ordered from us. We want to do things that will benefit and ease the lives of the people of La Digue”.

She thanked the La Digue community for their good cooperation.

The new STC supermarket at Anse Reunion was blessed by Reverend Simon Fred from the St Mathew’s Church on Praslin and Father Francis Mulinge of St Mary’s Church on La Digue.

Soon after, the supermarket was fully operational.

Some customers who talked to Seychelles Nation while doing their shopping said that they appreciated the new supermarket because it is more spacious, they can move about freely and more goods are available.

“The goods are cheap compared to other shops. For the time being I am very satisfied and happy,” one lady customer said.
