Soroptimist holds cancer awareness walk |18 October 2014

As part of activities to mark cancer month, the Soroptimist Club of Victoria on Wednesday evening organised what they have called a ‘beach moon walk’ at Beau Vallon.

As the sun was setting behind Silhouette Island, a group of about 200 people all dressed in pink had turned up for the one-hour stroll on Seychelles’ most popular beach.

What better way to, after a hard day’s work, combine exercise, relaxation and at the same time campaign for a good cause and show solidarity to patients fighting the disease!

According to Angelika Morel of the Soroptimist, the whole month of October has been dedicated to raising awareness of the second highest cause of death in Seychelles after heart related diseases, as well as promoting healthy living.

“Cancer is a very sensitive issue and sometimes cancer patients think that it is the end of the road.  The activity will help raise awareness of the disease and at the same time promote healthy living. Walking on the beach is a good way of keeping fit,” she said.

The Soroptimist Club of Victoria is a women’s organisation which was formed 20 years ago with the aim of bettering the lives of women and children.

The next activity on its calendar is a ‘pink link’ to be held on Saturday October 25. It will start in the morning with the sale of ribbons in the streets of Victoria. At noon, the participants, who again will be dressed in pink, will gather in front of Trinity House before walking to the Seychelles Hospital, linked together in the form of a human chain.
