VP Faure and delegation tour DRDM offices |25 October 2014

Vice-President Danny Faure, accompanied by ministers Christian Lionnet and Peter Sinon, yesterday visited the head offices of the division of disaster and risk management (DRDM).

This was during an open day organised as part of activities during the month of October to celebrate International Day for Disaster Reduction on October 13.
DRDM director general Paul Labaleine gave the guests a tour of the office situated at the Global Village Complex, Mont Fleuri.

Speaking to Seychelles NATION, DRDM communications and information officer Regina Prosper said the visit has given the vice-president and ministers the opportunity to see for themselves what the DRDM has managed to accomplish, the staffing and equipment available.

“They have also seen how we function, how we can work closer and the communication facilities at our disposal,” Ms Prosper said.

Earlier this month, Seychelles joined other countries and organisations worldwide in a show of support to improve the situation of the elderly around the world both today and for growing future generations of older people.

This was through the signing of Charter Fourteen of the United Nations which calls for an inclusive approach to disaster risk reduction response to older people.

Designated Minister Vincent Meriton signed the pledge during a small ceremony at the National Cultural Centre in the presence of Vice-President Faure, special advisor in the Ministry of Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Dan Frichot, district administrators, officials of the DRDM and of the community development department and the elderly themselves.

This year the day is focusing on older people and the theme is ‘Resilience is for Life’.
