Let’s breakfast! |05 November 2014

La Misère primary school has launched its breakfast programme in line with the Ministry of Education’s efforts in promoting good health practices to enhance learning.

The school’s breakfast programme, sponsored by the Soroptimist Club of Victoria in collaboration with the Seychelles Trading Company Ltd (STC), will last for one year.

The launch ceremony yesterday was held at the school in the presence of the sponsors and ministry officials.

The headteacher of the school, Fatma Bibi, said she launched an appeal for sponsors for the programme after the school discovered that some pupils were not having breakfast in the morning.

She said that consent forms were sent to parents regarding the programme.

“We are offering the breakfast to pupils in the morning and this will help them concentrate better during classes. We approached the Soroptimist with the idea and they agreed to sponsor the programme,” said Ms Bibi.

She added that the school’s breakfast programme started at the beginning of the third term and the pupils take their breakfast daily from 7 to 7.30am.
There is a team of teachers at the school who prepare the breakfast for the 35 kids on the programme.

After the one-year duration, the school will decide on the next step.

“Parents consider this as a good initiative. When we first started there was some reluctance but as time went by kids became appreciative and talked to their parents about it. This resulted in more children joining the programme,” said the head teacher.

The breakfast generally consists of cornflakes, hot chocolate, milk, eggs, fruit and jam.

Speaking on the reason for sponsoring the programme, Soroptimist Club member Carolina Devaux said breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

“For children to be able to learn and concentrate in schools, they need breakfast. So when Ms Bibi approached us with the project, we were too happy to help,” said Mrs Devaux.

In a vote of thanks on behalf of all children, Haani Kilindo of P5, thanked the Soroptimist and other sponsors saying that breakfast is an important meal which provides them energy, keep them strong and in good health.

She urged her fellow pupils to make full use of the breakfast and not to waste it.

The club also presented educational toys to the school’s crèche section, all with the aim of enhancing their learning capabilities.
