12th SNP Women’s Organisation Convention |24 November 2014

SNP women meet under theme ‘Standing strong for the family’

The Seychelles National Party (SNP) Women’s Organisation held its 12th  convention on Saturday under the theme ‘Standing strong for the family’.
The gathering was held at the International Conference Centre (ICCS).
Unveiling the theme, Marjorie Bonnelame said many women nowadays are pillars of society and are standing on their own for their home. Social ills continue to affect families and the future of the children is being threatened.

“We believe as parents we have a big role to play towards the protection of our children. This is why it gives me great pleasure to unveil the theme of our convention today – ‘Standing strong for the family’,” said Mrs Bonnelame.

Also present at the convention was the party’s secretary general Nicholas Prea;  members of the party’s and women’s executive committees, as well as members.

Representatives from the social affairs department and the Seychelles Police Family Squad were also present to portray the social and family situations in the country.

After the secretary Claudette Adela and treasure Deshiela Bastienne have presented their report on the SNP Women’s Organisation, chairperson Regina Alcindor addressed the delegates present, praising the organisation for having the same number of women and men as office bearers.
She encouraged all women who wish to join the organisation to come forward and do so.

“The SNP Women’s Organisation remains strong and determined for the advancement of our party’s principles. Today I am delighted to say that little by little women are finding their places and being recognised in the work done by the party,” said Ms Alcindor.

She said that the SNP women are against all forms of abuse. She also mentioned the social ills and negative effects that are on the rise. She deplored the abuse on small children who she said are innocent and more vulnerable, hence the presence of the social affairs and Seychelles police family squad at the convention to talk on such issue.

Among other topics, Ms Alcindor also made reference to the cost of living which she said is too high, and the education system of Seychelles.
Other social ills elaborated on were drug and alcohol abuse.

On the country’s health, Ms Alcindor urged the Ministry of Health to carry out a study on the quality of food and drinks that enter the country as she thinks some of them are very unhealthy.

Regarding the family, she said it is the basis of society and should be protected and that children are our treasure that should also be protected.
Her speech was followed by questions and contributions from the floor.

The convention ended with a vote of thanks from vice-chairperson Lydia Jumeau.
