‘Arrive Alive’ campaign kicks off with a bang |28 November 2014

The recently launched ‘Arrive Alive’ campaign aimed at deterring drunk driving and the consumption of alcohol liquor on public roads, has got off with a big bang.

A combined team of officers from different police units mounted four static roadblocks on Bois de Rose, Providence and Beau Vallon this past weekend.

Statistics compiled have revealed that within just 24 hours, from Saturday morning to early Sunday morning, over 125 vehicles went through these roadblocks and 50 drivers, of whom three from Praslin, were arrested for driving a motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit.

The Providence highway roadblock alone resulted in 25 arrests out of 75 stops. This represents 33 percent of the total number of drivers tested on that stretch of road, meaning the drivers of every one out of three vehicles stopped were found to have consumed alcohol in excess of the limit prescribed by the law under sober driving regulations.

Some of the tests carried out during that 24-hour period showed figures as high as 200 mlg which is six times more than the acceptable level.

Also arrested and detained within that time period were one person for drug related offence, one person wanted for robbery, burglary and stealing, and two others who refused to take the test, which is in contravention of the law.

The encouraging sign of this newly launched ‘Arrive Alive’ campaign with the slogan ‘Drunk driving wrecks lives’ is that the police have also observed that in some of the vehicles stopped were persons presumed to be under the influence of alcohol or other substance but their drivers were sober.

The concept of designated driver is one educational aspect that the police are promoting in their campaign. Such aspect is also being supported by Seychelles Breweries which is collecting data on all sober drivers from the police. The information will go in a draw at the end of the campaign.

While the police are asking everyone to see the ‘Arrive Alive’ campaign – ‘Drunk driving wrecks lives’ – in a more positive light they are also calling on motorists as well as pedestrians to be more responsible when using the roads.

The police firmly believe that zero tolerance for drunk driving will help render our roads safer and lead to a reduction in the number of serious and fatal accidents.
