Cascade family council makes donation to prison |29 November 2014

The Cascade district authority and its family council have made a donation to the Montagne Posée prison with the aim of empowering the inmates with life skills to better contribute to society.

The items donated included sports equipment and books.

“Our role as family council is to consider family in all its aspects and we try to help in combating the ills of society. The inmates form part of the society also and we need to help them reintegrate once their sentence is over. The Cascade district authority is meeting the inmates from our district (some 20) and try to develop a friendship so that it would be easier for them to reintegrate with their families once their sentence is over,” said Catherine Magnan, member of the Cascade family council.

Robert Moumou, chairperson of the National Family Council, also addressed the inmates making them realise their main role as a man.

“You are the ones who need to preach, provide and protect your family, not the other way round,” he said.

The member of the National Assembly for Cascade, Charles de Commarmond, encouraged the inmates to forget their past and look toward a brighter and honest future.

“The government is doing a lot to improve the situation in the prisons and there are many programmes available for inmates. It will be of no use to have these programmes if you, inmates, do not take part in them,” said the MNA.

The hand over of the donation took place recently during the authority’s second visit to the prison. During their first visit, it was felt that there was a need for certain resources and equipment.

The district’s administrator Fred Barratt was also present during the visit.
