The Hour of Code comes to Seychelles |19 December 2014

A group of students in Seychelles have been introduced to computer programming through the ‘Hour of Code’.

The aim of the code is to introduce 10 million students from all around the world and of all ages to computer programming by encouraging them to code software and games.

Hosted by Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands, the Hour of Code session in Seychelles took place on Wednesday at the University of Seychelles – India-Seychelles Centre for Excellence in ICT at Mont Fleuri.

The session was conducted by Ruth Mohotti, the Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) Lead for Seychelles.

The Hour of Code is a worldwide event and an initiative of Microsoft Indian Ocean islands. It was created by the Code.org organisation and takes place within the Computer Science Education Week (CSED Week). The week-long programme is dedicated to highlighting the importance of computer science in education.
“This whole thing is done is to divestify coding and to make anyone believe that they can code,” said Ms Mohotti during her interactive session with the students, urging them to have fun while learning.

It is hoped that the students will learn how to create their own video game in one hour.

During the Hour of Code, four types of learning are developed around algorithm, coding, debugging as well as parameters and functionalities. These key learnings will allow the improvement of capabilities in order to convert real-life activities into instructions, programming by using instructions in symbols, the understanding of the need for precision in programming and practice for better problem-solving.
