NCC’s ‘Spirit of Giving’campaign is all about the spirit of Christmas |24 December 2014

And here we are again, just a day before, Christmas! That magical time of decoration, toys, trees, angels, bells and father Christmas and shoppers buying lots  of delicacies to eat and listening to carols like ‘Oh Holy Night!’ on Radio Seychelles still conjures memories of childhood when  all the children would be waiting for Santa to enter their homes at midnight with presents.

A stroll through Victoria in the evening is very exciting for Seychellois children now as there is a sort of magic in the air. Yes! We all want our children to be happy on Christmas mornings – we want them to be full of elation, we want them to be jumping up and down in jubilation as they rip their presents open but as parents we still want to convey the message to our children that “giving is more important than receiving”.  Even when they are lost in a world of their own.

And the things we want as parents make us very vulnerable, because most of the time our heads are full of material wants – of course! We want our children to be safe, to have enough to eat, clean clothes on their backs, and lives free of serious worries. We want to see our kids playing, laughing, feeling free. And also teach them that Christmas is not mostly about opening presents but about opening our hearts. That it is not just a time for receiving but it is also a time for giving. Christmas is a time to remember others less fortunate than ourselves, a time for families to end their quarrels and come together, a time to celebrate the birth of Christ. We know all these things, yet we tend to forget this each year. It is that time again, right now, our children’s favourite time of year – when we can pass on the true spirit of Christmas-

If possible, during the coming days let us spend sometime in doing things like giving time and attention to others in need. Our best gift to others, and the best gift we can give to ourselves, is to pay attention, to listen to the voice of Christmas, and to give ourselves to others, even if it is only for a short amount of time. Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting; it can bring happiness because we see joy in others. Let us show compassion and offer love  to others as these are the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas.
NCC wishes everyone a truly merry Christmas.
