National Assembly aims to better its position globally |26 December 2014

The National Assembly has during this year aimed to gain more recognition and strengthen its position on the international scene and this is expected to start producing results in the coming years, the  Speaker, Dr Patrick Herminie, has said.

Dr Herminie was speaking on Monday during the last sitting of the National Assembly for this year.

Thanking everyone and all partners, collaborators who have made 2014 a successful one in general, in particular President James Michel and the executive arm of government for all their support to the Assembly, the two leaders of the House -- Marie-Antoinette Rose and David Pierre -- for their understanding of matters relating to prompt Assembly decisions, and the deputy speaker for ensuring that Assembly matters runs smoothly in his absence.

“This year has been one where a lot of emphasis has been placed on foreign diplomacy and as the Speaker of the Assembly I have visited different capitals of the world, engaging in discussions aimed at ensuring our National Assembly is present and is well represented on the international scene  in different  important organisations, institutions and forums,” Dr Herminie said.

Dr Herminie pointed out that he is confident these discussions will start to bear results in the coming years especially as our National Assembly secures its position on the international scene, gets the recognition it is aiming for so as to play a more important role in organisations like the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA),  SADC Pan African Parliament among others.

Noting that the National Assembly has earned a lot of respect and recognition, Dr Herminie availed of the opportunity to thank members whose participation in different international conferences, workshops and meetings have played a crucial role in strengthening our Assembly’s position  internationally.

“Feedbacks resulting from our members’ intervention during their participations in international forums have resulted in our Assembly, though from a very small jurisdiction, earning remarkable respect abroad and for this I am very happy,” Dr Herminie said.
