Apart from policing … the Seychelles Police also sing! |24 January 2015

It is not just about ensuring law and order like combating and preventing crimes; dealing with traffic offences, murders, thefts, or ensuring safety for our locals and visitors alike in Seychelles … The Seychelles Police also have time to relax … and sing! And this is done through their 25-strong choir set up on January 24, 2014.

“The aim of the choir is to create a bond and encourage good values among us police officers, to socialise and to show off our skills as well,” says Inspector Nancy Henry.

The choir started practicing two or three times per month depending on the national activities or special duties programmed.

“As you know more manpower is needed during some months of the year like June and December for example. We have performed on different occasions for example on police day, funerals of a police officer, if relatives of a police officer passes away and any national activities that come our way,” says Inspector Henry.

She says the choir has also taken part in Labour Day celebrations, gospel shows, SBC’s Christmas office choir, etc.

“We intend to be involved more this year,” says the inspector.

The choir comprises police officers of different ages and ranks. The members normally practice at the police headquarters. If they have an activity whereby they need more musical instruments, they get the help of police band comprising again of officers of different ages, ranks and from different sections and units of the force. Whenever this happens, the choir meets at the Seychelles Police Academy as it is more spacious.

Right now the choir has no professional singer or musician helping them. It will surely welcome any one who wishes to come forward and help. Currently the choir is receiving help from one of its members, Shane Pharabeau, who is a former winner of the Sesel I Annan Talan singing contest.

“For the Seychelles Police long service award held earlier this month, we had the honour of having Patrick Victor to help us as we were singing one of his songs. He expressed his wish for us to stay together and he has promised to give a helping hand in any way he can,” says Inspector Henry.
Anyone out there with music skills please come forward and help the police sing!
