Weightlifter Agricole retains title, boxer Allisop reclaim crown


Female weightlifter Clementina Agricole has retained the Sportswoman of the Year title, while boxer Andrique Allisop has reclaimed the Sportsman of the Year crown.
The two best athletes of the year 2014 were decorated by President James Michel during last night’s 31st Sports Awards of the Year crowning ceremony at the National Sports Council’s exhibition hall.

Felicity Passon is the Young Female Athlete of the Year while the Young Male Athlete of the Year title has gone to boxer Keven Kilindo.

Clementina Agricole – Sportswoman of the Year

Weightlifter Clementina Agricole keeps the Sportswoman of the Year title she won for the first time in 2013.
At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, she took the worst place finish – fourth place – missing the bronze medal by 3kg.

International competition
. Achieved a fourth place finish in the 58kg weight class with a total of 199kg (88kg in snatch and 111kg in clean & jerk) at the 2014 Commonwealth Games

Local competition
. She finished with an Olympic total of 200kg (85kg snatch and 115kg clean & jerk) in the 58kg category to improve the record by 18kg at the Open Championship

Brigitte Rose – runner-up

Voted the best female judoka of the year for the fifth consecutive year, Praslinois Brigitte Rose competed in the -78kg class and was ranked fifth at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Finishing as runner-up is a big improvement after claiming fourth place in 2013.

Juliette Ah-Wan – third place finisher
Chosen as Sportswoman of the Year in 2000 and 2007, Juliette Ah-Wan has retained third place overall.

. Bronze medallist in the team event at the African Senior Championship
. Lost in the quarterfinal stage of the women’s doubles of the South Africa Open

Alisen Camille – fourth place finisher

Runner-up in 2013, badminton player Alisen Camille settled for fourth place in 2014. She was voted Sportswoman of the Year in 2011 and was chosen as Young Female Athlete of the Year in 2009.

Joanne Loutoy – fifth place finisher

Voted the best female track and field athlete of the year for the first time, Joanne Loutoy really impressed in 2014 and made the 100m record hers.

. Won the Mauritius National Championship’s 100m race in a time of 11.86 seconds for a new Seychelles record
. Won the Mauritius National Championship’s 200m race
. Competed in the 60-metre event at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships and clocked a personal best of 7.75 seconds
. Won the 100m and 200m races at the Mauritius International Meet clocking 12.04 seconds and 25.18 seconds
. Competed at the Commonwealth Games, running the 100m and 200m races
. Took part in the 19th CAA African Athletics Championship, in Marrakech, Morocco

Local competitions
. Twice clocked 7.4 seconds over 60m for a Seychelles record
. Lowered the 150m record to 17.6 seconds
. Won the 100m and 200m races at the National Championship
. Won the 100m and 200m races at the National Junior/Senior competition

 

Andrique Allisop – Sportsman of the Year
Andrique Allisop is back as Sportsman of the Year after he first won the title in 2012. The young boxer really did well on the international scene winning two gold medals in 2014.

International competitions
. Gold medallist in the 60kg weight category at the fifth Africa Boxing Cup in South Africa
. Gold medallist in the 60kg weight category at the Limassol Boxing Championship in Cyprus
. Won a fight and then lost in the last 16 stage of the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland


Ziad Al Adou Mekdachi – runner-up

Flex poser Ziad Al Adou Mekdachi successfully defended his Mr Seychelles crown and performed well internationally in 2014 as the sport of bodybuilding enjoyed a good comeback on the sports scene.

International competitions
. Gold medallist in the 90kg category at the Mr Olympia Amateur in South Africa and ranked second overall
. Gold medallist in the 90kg division at the Eric Favre Classic Nuit des Champions in Mauritius and ranked second overall

Local competitions
. Winner of the Seychelles Bodybuilding championships
. Winner of the Mr Seychelles crown
Steve Malcouzane – third place finisher

Sportsman of the Year 2009 Steve Malcouzane formed part of the Seychelles team who won the team bronze medal at the African Championship and was a bronze medallist alongside Georgie Cupidon in the men’s doubles. He has kept his third place overall.

Runner-up in 2013, Georgie Cupidon, a former two-time former Sportsman of the Year in 2006 and 2007, was part of the Seychelles team who won the team bronze medal at the African Championship and was a bronze medallist alongside Georgie Cupidon in the men’s doubles.
