Indian association donates dictionaries to schools |05 February 2015

All upper primary (P5 & P6) and lower secondary (S1 & S2) schools on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue will be issued with picture dictionaries thanks to a generous donation by the Indian Association of Seychelles.

The hand-over of the donation took place last week at the Ministry of Education hall where all head teachers were attending a training workshop on ‘Formal appraisal’.

The one thousand Usborne illustrated English dictionaries were bought in the UK at a cost of R350,000.

Vijay Patel, the chairman of the association, said the intention of donating this particular type of dictionaries is because they contain pictures that will attract children’s attention, thus helping them to learn something more from pictures.

In a symbolic gesture, Mr Patel handed over a dictionary each to Fatima Agathine, head teacher for Au Cap primary school and Fabien Palmyre, head teacher for Anse Royal secondary school.

Other copies were afterwards distributed to other head teachers.
On behalf of the Ministry of Education, early childhood, primary and secondary education principal secretary Merida Delcy thanked the Indian Association of Seychelles for the donation which she described as of very high standard and good quality.

She gave her assurances that the dictionaries will be put to good use.

She also underlined the ministry’s appreciation of the association’s supportive affiliation to some schools such as Bel Ombre, Port Glaud, Anse Boileau and that she looked forward for the continued support from the Indian Association of Seychelles.
