Mixed reactions to change in traffic flow direction on Castor Road |26 February 2015

Motorists and pedestrians have had mixed reactions to the change in traffic flow directions on Castor Road which came into effect early Monday morning.
As of Monday, the Seychelles Land Transport Agency (SLTA) changed the traffic flow on Castor Road in the opposite direction from town to English River instead of from English River to town as part of an exercise to evaluate traffic flow on this stretch of road.

While some drivers believe the move will improve traffic flow others think there will not be much change but will instead increase congestion and at the same time create an inconvenience for vehicle owners who live at English River.

One pedestrian even pointed out that it makes crossing the road at the junction to SBC radio station at Union Vale more tricky as there is now more traffic on this stretch of road flowing in both direction as traffic entering Greenwich from the north remains unchanged.

SLTA’s chief executive Parindah Herath said based on studies conducted since improvements have been made on  5th June Avenue, all indications show that traffic flow will further improve if direction on Castor Road is changed but for the time being this is being conducted on a trial basis.

“The change will be for a week or more, at least giving us time to evaluate the situation. If the results are positive we will leave it as such but if other unpredicted issues arise and do not help traffic flow as we had expected we will revert back to the original direction,” Mr Herath explained.

Mr Herath is calling on the cooperation of motorists going towards the north via Anse Etoile to use
Castor Road to help SLTA in its evaluation.

Throughout the week traffic police officers are stationed at the two junctions of Castor Road near the Ste Elizabeth Convent  and the  roundabout  going  to Ile Perseverance to  guide motorists.
