Seychelles joins in climate change rally |27 February 2015

Cyclists, skateboarders, roller skaters and electric vehicle owners recently took part in a climate change rally in Victoria.

The rally formed part of a global campaign dubbed ‘Ride for the planet’, organised by the international group 350.org calling for divestment in fossil fuels and investments in more climate friendly forms of energy.

The local acitivity was spearheaded by non-governmental organisation Sustainability for Seychelles (S4S).

During the weekend of February 13-14 several events were organised around the world by global organisers to show the government and the oil industry that people are ready to replace the use of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources.

The event in Victoria highlighted how non-carbon forms of transportation can provide a viable alternative to fossil fuel vehicles and intended to raise awareness of the environmental and health benefits of cycling and other forms of transport that do not rely on fossil fuels.

It also brought to the fore obstacles to the promotion of cycling, such as safety as well as import taxes on bicycles.

“We are really happy to see so many young cyclists here today with the intention to stop climate change and perhaps to ride their bicycles a bit more than they usually do,” a spokesperson for the organisers said.
