President Michel hosts lunch for Indian PM Narendra Modi |12 March 2015

‘Indian PM’s visit is a celebration of shared values’

“Today is a great day for Seychelles. Today is a very important day for Seychelles. Today the global spotlight is on Seychelles. The Prime Minister of India is visiting us.  You have honoured us with your visit and we appreciate it. The people of Seychelles appreciate it.”

These were the words of President James Michel at State House yesterday during a lunch he hosted in honour of the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, who was here on a one-day official visit.

The lunch was also attended by the Vice-President of Seychelles, Danny Faure; the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Transport, Joel Morgan; the President of the Court of Appeal, Francis MacGregor; acting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Durai Karunakaran; the Seychelles high commissioner to India, Waven William and other high level government officials.

President Michel said the day was a historic one as the two countries have signed several agreements during bilateral talks and have shared and discussed issues in many areas and have also strengthened their relations.

“That’s why I want to thank you for accepting to share this lunch with us. It is also a celebration. A celebration of your visit. A celebration of our friendship. Friendship between India and Seychelles. A celebration of our shared values. Our shared cultural mix and also our shared vision,” said President Michel.

The president also said the event is a celebration of the two countries’ success as two great friends sharing the same ocean, sharing the same vision to see how they both can further develop the potential that exists between the two partnerships.

He described the Indian Ocean as a bridge that brings the two countries closer together.
As for Prime Minister Modi, he said India and Seychelles are bound by the vastness of the ocean that unites them.

“When we talk about the vastness of the ocean, our dreams are also very big and our aspirations are huge and the efforts that are put in are also huge. I believe given the depth of the ocean, our relations will also have this kind of depth. And this will contribute to peace in the whole region,” he said.

PM Modi also said that security is a very important issue in the ocean and when he talks about security he does not mean coastal security which he acknowledges as also important, but security related to climate change.

“There also we need to ensure that there is a secure future and in those efforts India will always be with you,” said the prime minister.
Both leaders then proposed a toast for the occasion.
