Indian PM welcomed at State House |12 March 2015

Indian Prime Minister, His Excellency Narendra Modi and his delegation were warmly welcomed at State House yesterday morning by President James Michel, Vice-President Danny Faure, several ministers and other government and military officials.

PM Modi then signed the visitor’s book before having a short tête-à-tête discussion with President Michel. This was followed by a bilateral meeting between the two leaders and their delegations.

In his welcoming address President Michel said we are greatly honoured by this 2nd Prime Ministerial visit since India and Seychelles established diplomatic relations in June 1976.

“We are indeed privileged to have someone of your status, a great friend and an ally of Seychelles in our midst. Your visit also highlights the special bonds of friendship between India and Seychelles and marks yet another milestone in the close relationship between our two nations,” President Michel said.

President Michel noted that the relationship between India and Seychelles is one which is characterised as extraordinary and privileged which has grown over the years to encompass a vast and diverse range of activities.

“Your Excellency this is a dynamic and multi-faceted relationship which is being nurtured on both sides through close high level political interactions and strong people to people contacts and intensive government cooperation,” President Michel  said.

Wishing PM Modi and his delegation a pleasant stay though short, President Michel reiterated how honoured we are to receive His Excellency in Seychelles.
PM Modi, through an interpreter, expressed deep gratitude to President Michel and the people of Seychelles for the great enthusiasm, warmth and hospitality with which they have welcomed him and his delegation.

“It is a matter of great honour, respect and pride for me to be in your midst,” PM Modi said.

He added that on his first visit to the Indian Ocean he chose to start it in Seychelles because “I know how important Seychelles is to India and how important the Indian Ocean region is to us and our relations and friendship have  strengthened under your leadership and I hope they will continue to prosper in the times to come with this visit,” PM Modi said.
