Beau Vallon secondary students introduced to SEYx30 |09 April 2015

Following the introduction of SEYx30 at Pointe Larue, Belonie, Plaisance and La Digue secondary schools, it was the turn of Beau Vallon to mobilise its students and teachers to embrace this exercise programme in a ceremony which was held on April 1 at the school’s premises.

It was Joshua Sophola, the head boy, who got the session to a roaring start with a short but stimulating poem which described the challenge that his fellow students were about to commit themselves to – ‘En Nouvo Style’.

Two special guests were on hand to offer their support and useful advice to this enthusiastic gathering. They were no other than badminton champion Juliette Ah-Wan who was also the winner of the Sportswoman of the Year title in 2000 and 2007, and canoeist Tony Lespoir who was crowned Sportsman of the Year Award in 2008. Ah-wan and Lespoir alluded to their sense of focus, the love for their chosen sport and their desire to stay fit and healthy as the source of their motivation to adopt a culture of exercise.

Beau Vallon school intends to embark on this programme with volleyball, walking and jogging which will initially be practiced at least

three times weekly.

The ceremony, which ended with some lively aerobics led by Dorothy Isidore of the National Sports Council, was attended by the

principal secretary for youth Alain Volcère, Health Care Agency deputy chief executive Dr Danny Louange, district administrator Barbara Stravens, head teacher Judanne Loze and members of staff of the Beau Vallon secondary school and members of staff of the youth department and the Seychelles National Youth Council.

The SEYx30 programme aims to use physical exercise and sports as a means to prevent and restrain the incidence of obesity and overweight among the adolescent and youth population of Seychelles as well as promote exercise as a vital component of healthy living.
