Val D’Andorre farmers team up in community project |16 April 2015

Volunteerism at its best

A group of farmers from Val D’Andorre and members of their families, youths included, came together on Sunday in a great display of unity and volunteerism to repair a dilapidated access road leading to their farms and other essential facilities.

Initiated by the Val D’Andorre Farmers Association (VFA) in collaboration with the rest of the community, work included repairing parts of the road which was filled with potholes, leveling its sides at different intervals, clearing overhanging tree branches, cutting down invading roadside creepers and other trees.

All the required material were purchased by the VFA and as there were masons among the members they led the work while they all brought along the tools, equipment and machinery required to carry out the task effectively.

The chairperson of VFA, Juliana Brutus, said the turnout surpassed their expectation.

“We are really very happy because there was a good turnout of some 50 people and this shows that everyone is concerned and wanted to see an improvement in the facility which is essential for our farming activities up here,” Mrs Brutus said.

Mrs Brutus pointed out that funds used in the project are from the proceeds collected during the two-year GEF/UNDP project to gather and propagate rare plant crop species.

Many of the plant species were sold. The VFA also often organises the sale of gro manze (traditional crops like cassava, sweet potatoes, breadfruit, yams, etc) and other activities to raise funds.

Following the success of this activity Mrs Brutus extended heartfelt gratitude to the Val D’Andorre community and said the VFA is very much encouraged and will consider similar initiatives in the future.

Jose Guerrero, an agricultural extension officer and also a member of the VFA, thanked the Seychelles Agricultural Agency (SAA) for providing them with transport.

He said the access road built some 15 years ago is essential to the farming community, residents of the area who use it to get to the agricultural store, the community centre and elsewhere.

After the work was completed the VFA members had lunch together in a relaxing atmosphere.
