Seychelles, Italy to reignite areas of cooperation |06 May 2015

Foreign Affairs and Transport Minister Joël Morgan and the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic, Benedetto Della Vedova, met in Rome, Italy last Thursday to discuss relations between the two countries.

They concurred on the benefits that a strengthening of these relations could bear in the present and in the near future.

Minister Morgan has expressed appreciation for Italy’s contribution to the European Union (EU) programme for combating piracy in the Indian Ocean and stressed the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation between Seychelles and the EU to ensure the maintenance of appropriate measures to deter and deal with criminal activities in the region.

Both parties welcomed the finalisation of a new bilateral air services agreement between Italy and Seychelles and preparations for the resumption of direct flights between the two countries as well as efforts to ensure that Italy retains its traditional position as a top market for Seychelles tourism. Minister Morgan congratulated Italy for the organisation of the Milan Expo 2017 and accepted the invitation for Seychelles to take part in a ministerial conference at the Expo dedicated to small island developing states on the subjects of food security, sustainable agriculture and energy and the challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters.

The Directorate general for development cooperation (DGDC) will also be covering the cost of two ministerial conferences at the EXPO, dedicated to the least developed countries (LDCs) in Africa and the small island developing states (Sids). A specific emphasis will be placed on food security, sustainable agriculture, energy, and the challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters. Both initiatives will provide an opportunity to confirm the priority status Italy gives to the African continent and to the small islands states of the Pacific and Caribbean.

The discussions touched on cooperation in the fields of education and culture and Minister Morgan also proposed the organisation of a forum to promote Italian investment in Seychelles.

Minister Morgan took the opportunity to talk of the Blue Economy being promoted by Seychelles and the opportunities for cooperation and for investment that the related activities will bring.

Minister Morgan was accompanied by Ambassador Bernard Shamlaye, Seychelles Ambassador accredited to Italy.
