Finance minister meet actors in the agricultural sector |22 May 2015

A meeting was convened yesterday morning to discuss the problems and challenges being faced by the agricultural sector, as well as identify short-term as well as long-term measures to help it get back on its feet.

The meeting, held at Liberty House, brought together the management team of the farmers association, the Minister for Fisheries and Agriculture Wallace Cosgrow, high officials of the same ministry and of the Seychelles Agricultural Agency (SAA), as well as the Minister for Finance, Trade and the Blue Economy Jean-Paul Adam.

Minister Adam reassured everyone present that the government appreciates and continues to support the contribution of the agricultural sector in spite of all the challenges it has been through.
“In spite of all the challenges and difficulties there are opportunities and it is now a question of how we unlock those opportunities in the sector,” Minister Adam said.

“Together we will explore and identify ways by which we can help, and what kind of support we can put at your disposal,” he said.

“Following the meeting we plan to take some immediate measures with regard to financing in relation to fiscal space and supporting the policies that the government has already put in place in order to better recognise and fully support the important role this sector plays in terms of food security,” Minister Adam said.

For his part Minister Cosgrow said he has been meeting with the farmers association since the beginning of the year and he admitted that there are numerous issues which need to be addressed before the sector can really operate as it should.

Serge Benstrong, the chairperson of the farmers association, said they want the sector to be productive like it was some five years ago.
Yesterday afternoon Minister Adam met the Seychelles Bankers Association.
