Seychelles Webcup 2015 kickstarts today |23 May 2015

Following last year’s success of the Seychelles Webcup, Seychellois web enthusiasts will once again have the opportunity to showcase their talents in the Seychelles Webcup 2015 (first regional round) which is being organised this year by the Seychelles Internet Exchange Point Association (SEY-IX) as part of the National ICT Week programme of events.

The venue will once again be at the Care House, Freedom Square and the competition is set to start at noon today and end at noon tomorrow.

In summary, the participants, working as individuals or in teams (amateurs, students or professionals) must within 24 hours (non-stop) develop a website on a topic kept secret until the start of the competition.

The first regional round will be held simultaneously in Reunion, Mauritius, Mayotte, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles today and tomorrow. The winning team will then get to represent their country/island at the grand final which will take place on one of the Indian Ocean islands (to be announced at a later date) towards the end of the year where they will compete against the winning teams from the other five islands.  Last year’s grand final was held in Mauritius.

The Webcup is an annual event that was first introduced in 2010 by the Webcup Association based in Reunion Island, with the aim of promoting Information Communications Technology (ICT) around a fun and educational event – you may view http://seychelles.webcup.fr/ or Facebook Page WebCup Seychelles for more information on the event.

“This year, we have more teams of web enthusiasts that have come forward to take part and stand a chance of winning some great prizes and get the opportunity to represent Seychelles in the Grand Regional Final later in the year,” said Gilbert Lebon, chairperson of the SEY-IX.

Mr Lebon also expressed his appreciation towards the sponsors that have come forward to support the event and contributing towards making it a success.

“We are thankful to our main sponsor, Cable & Wireless Seychelles and also to the DICT (Department of Information Communications Technology), Maven, VCS, Switch, Kokonet and Care (Campaign for Awareness Resilience & Education against substance abuse) for their valuable contribution because without their support, the event would not have been possible,” Mr Lebon said.
