An action plan to minimise risks posed by dangerous chemicals |04 July 2015

Representative of ministries, departments and organisations involved in managing and minimising risks associated with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear substances have taken part in a workshop to finalise a document which will be presented to the government.

This two-day workshop which was held at Coral Strand hotel last week had been organised by the Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Centres of Excellence (CoE) for eastern and central Africa and is an initiative of the European Union (EU).

The local CBRN chapter was formerly launched in October 2013 when Seychelles joined this programme supported by the United Nations Intergovernmental Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI).

The formulation of the CBRN National Action Plan will address the issue of what Seychelles needs to do to minimise, if not eliminate, accidental, natural as well as criminal risks associated with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials.

This will be done through the collaboration of the different departments and organisations which have components in relation to these substances.

This document will give an overview of the current situation of the country of the CBRN unit and the capacity which the country has in place.

Alma Pintol, the regional coordinator for eastern and central Africa CBRN CoE, together with the national CBRN team ran this workshop.

Mrs Pintol said when we talk about chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear substances some people may feel that they are not directly affected by it, but to the contrary these substances are found in our everyday lives for example in the radiological machinery used in hospitals.

She also pointed out, that “management of waste is one of the aspects that usually show up when we are working with the countries. But then again I cannot anticipate what the risks of the country are, we can also see that throughout the day with the work with the institutions.”
