Labiche grabs two gold, Sidonie and Servina win bronze

Jumps specialist Lissa Labiche won two gold medals at the recent Kenya National Athletics Championship at the Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani, while both Jude Sidonie and Debrah Servina recorded bronze medal performances.

Labiche’s first gold medal performance came in her second favourite event, which is the long jump, where she leapt over a distance of 6.25m. Priscila Tabunda of Kenya was second with a distance of 6.08m and was followed in third position by Damaris Imbongo who jumped 5.89m for the bronze medal.

Clearing the bar at a height of 1.85m in the high jump event saw Labiche claim her second gold medal of the competition. She finished 15cm ahead of her closest competitor, Caroline Cherorich, who only cleared 1.70m. Third place went to Irvin Jepkemoi with a jump of 1.57m.

It was in the men’s high jump that Jude Sidonie managed to win bronze. He could only clear the bar at a height of 2.05m to finish way behind gold medal winner Mathew Sawe who jumped a massive 2.24m, while a height of 2.10m saw Nicanor Cheruiyot win silver.

The other bronze medal for Seychelles came courtesy of Debrah Servina whose throw of 37.23m in the discus event earned her third place on the podium. Betty Chebet was the winner of the event with a distance of 43.83m, while Caroline Cherotich won silver with a throw of 41.93m.

Debrah Servina also took part in the shot put throw event and registered a best effort of 10.74m.
Two Seychelles junior records were also improved during the championship. The first was by Ned Azemia who improved the men’s 400m hurdles record to 48.22 seconds, slashing 0.20 seconds off the previous time of 48.42 seconds which was being held by Evans Marie since 2002.

Dyland Sicobo was the other record setter and he improved his own time of 100m from 10.76 seconds set earlier this year to 10.73 seconds in the semifinals.

The other athletes who took part in the competition are Jean-Yves Roseline (21.80 seconds in 200m), Dean William (40.55m in discus, 47.56m in hammer, and 12.83m in shot put) and Neddy Marie (48.41 seconds in 400m).
