Two get life for drug trafficking |28 July 2015

Two Seychellois – Jean François Adrienne and Terrence Servina – have been sentenced to life imprisonment on three counts in relation to a case of drug trafficking.

The life sentence is the first to have been imposed in Seychelles as provided for in the 2012 amendment of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Adrienne, a 34-year-old farmer and carpenter and Servina, a 42-year-old driver, who are both of Mont Plaisir, Anse Royale were on Friday July 24 convicted by the Supreme Court on three counts in relation to a case of drug trafficking, according to a communiqué received from the National Enforcement Drugs Agency (NDEA).

The drugs, weighing over 47 kilograms of cannabis, were seized by the NDEA on lands owned by one of the accused on April 9, 2014. At a resumed hearing of the Supreme Court yesterday both men were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The offence in respect of which the men were convicted, trafficking of illegal drugs in excess of 250 grams, carries a life sentence, as provided for in the 2012 amendment of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Still according to the communiqué, both men pleaded not guilty at their trial and after a lengthy trial were convicted on the evidence before the court which included technical and forensic evidence that was recovered from the scene.

“The life sentence is the first to have been imposed in this country since the repealed section of the act was enacted in 2012,” adds the communiqué.

Both men have been the subject of NDEA attention for a considerable time. This attention culminated in an NDEA search and seizure operation that was carried out on April 9, 2014, at an isolated farm in the Anse Boileau area. The evidence found at the scene had all the signs of an industrial distribution centre for illegal drugs.

The drugs that were recovered were contained in a collection of barrels and bags that had been concealed underground to avoid detection.

The drugs are believed to have emanated from Madagascar and conveyed by boat to this country a short time prior to their discovery and seizure.
