Youth assembly approves three motions |30 July 2015

Three motions were approved during the third sitting of the 12th Seychelles National Youth Assembly (SNYA) held last Saturday at the National House.

Present at the sitting were the 24 members of the 12th SNYA who represent their respective districts and institutions, as well as past SNYA members who were there as observers.

The first motion tabled by Jean Michel Camille from La Digue and seconded by Henrie Woodcock was proposing that the Ministry of Education considers reinforcing the protection laws for teachers in relation to threats they face within their profession.

The mover of the motion pointed out that there will always be a lack of teachers if we do not reinforce these laws. He used La Digue as an example, whereby students are obliged to do English as a second language core due to a lack of teachers.

The second motion proposed by Eddy Morel and seconded by Gina Simara was proposing that the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the prison department considers studying the possibility of encouraging young prisoners who have completed their sentences to be placed on special vocational courses.

Mr Morel explained that many young prisoners continue to induce themselves with bad influences when their sentences come to an end, so through this study the government could have an idea of how many youths want to take up vocational courses.

After completing these courses they can be rewarded with certificates which will allow them to gain employment in that particular field, he added.

The third and last motion was asking that the Ministry of Education and the department of environment, in partnership with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) comes up with an inter-school competition whereby students will use eco- friendly materials within our environment to produce different items such as bags, which will help eliminate the use of plastic bags in Seychelles.

The motion was tabled by Henry Woodcock, representing Pointe Larue, and seconded by Sharon Jerry.

He noted that this motion will add to efforts by other sectors such as the environment, economy, education, tourism, and employment in their mission to eradicate plastic bags in the Seychelles.

A talk was also conducted by former speaker of 11th SNYA Angelique Pouponneau, now co-founder of Sids Youth Aims Hub (SYAH), about the negative impacts of plastic bags on the society as well as SYAH projects to reduce pollution in the Seychelles.

The next sitting of the 12th SNYA has been scheduled for August 29.
