Police upbeat about the setting up of a DNA forensic lab |01 August 2015

Experts from Interpol and CellMark, a highly worldwide reputed DNA and forensic service provider, left Seychelles on Wednesday after a three-day mission to assess and advise the Seychelles Police on its dream DNA laboratory project.

During their mission, Interpol’s Mathew Rosbottom, who is based in Nairobi, Cellmark’s laboratory engineer and operations development manager Chris Ford and business development manager Elaine Higgins, visited the current police forensic facilities at Mont Fleuri and also the building on Bois De Rose which they say are ideal to house the DNA, biology and chemical laboratories.

Accompanied by Interpol’s liaison officer to Seychelles, Tone Lil Solstad, the experts met and briefed the Minister for Home Affairs Charles Bastienne at his office on Tuesday morning in the presence of Police Commissioner Ernest Quatre and his two assistants, ACP Reginald Elizabeth and ACP Godfra Hermitte.

Based on their findings and assessment, Interpol and Cellmark are to produce a report in the coming two weeks.

Both Minister Bastienne and the police management were upbeat about this very first step towards the realisation of such project which has been on the police wish list of projects for sometime now.

“We will make it happen,” said the minister. “This is a dream project for sometime now, we have full support of the government, and it’s just a matter of time,” he pointed out.

“Once set up and operational we will have an upper hand on the criminals and this will be a massive boost towards our crime combating mission,” added Minister Bastienne.

Minister Bastienne also did not forget to seize the opportunity to express his appreciation and gratitude to Interpol for all support and help to the force, including its pivotal role in the acquisition of our Automated Fingerprint System which so far has proven to be very effective in crime detection.

It is also worthy to note that this mission to Seychelles was financed by Interpol through that excellent existing cooperation with the police.

The meeting with Minister Bastienne was later followed by a thorough and exciting presentation by the Cellmark DNA and Forensic Services experts at Reflecs-3, a presentation which apart from members of the police management team and CID senior officers, was also attended by all members of the forensic unit.
