Learning new and innovative ways of making jewellery |01 August 2015

The Small Enterprise Promotion Agency (SEnPA) organised a five-day training this week to teach people how to create their own jewellery using unique materials such as stones and shells.

The workshop ended yesterday with the presentation of certificates to those who attended.

The ceremony took place at the Ceps (ex-Lungos) office in Victoria in the presence of Senpa’s chief executive Penny Belmont and staff.

Ms Belmont said this training was for individuals who have a business idea and wanted to venture into the handicraft and jewellery business.

“Every year at Senpa we try to be innovative, and people are always asking for jewellery training. For this year we managed to bring the training also to people on Praslin and La Digue. On Mahé the training attracted 10 individuals,” she remarked.

She added that Senpa is trying to encourage people to use materials from the environment or materials that are made locally.

“I encourage all those who took part to use materials like shells or stones, using only materials from the environment to make their own fashionable jewellery,” she said.

She concluded by saying that this session was only a basic one, and that Senpa is planning another training in the near future.

The youngest person who received certificate yesterday was Adrien Baquero, who is only 11 years old.

An exhibition was also organised to display the items produced during the training session and those present had a chance to view the end products.

Wilton Constance, who specialises in fashion jewellery, led the five-day session.
