It’s all systems go for ‘Lafet La Digue’ |14 August 2015

Celebrations to mark this year’s religious Feast of the Assumption (more commonly known as ‘Lafet La Digue’) started with a bang last night with a moutya opposite the tourism office on the island.

For four days a host of activities have been planned to mark this year’s manifestation which has become a must-attend event for both visitors and locals alike.

Celebrated every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven. Incidentally Mary is the Patron Saint of La Digue, hence the reason why this religious feast is locally known as ‘Lafet La Digue’ (Feast of La Digue).

On the big day itself, August 15, the highlight – as is tradition – will be the grand gathering for the open-air mass at ‘La Grotte’ and the procession through La Digue leading to the St Mary’s church.

The religious celebrations will be followed by cultural activities for young and old alike (see accompanying programme).

‘Lafet La Digue’ always attracts a large number of people to the island, making it an all-time favourite among Seychellois and tourists alike.

If you are still thinking about where to go this weekend, La Digue is the place to be.
