Culinary contest 2015 - Patrick Barbe excels in Main Course |03 September 2015

Patrick Barbe is the winner of the Main Course segment of the ongoing Seychelles National Culinary Competition 2015 which got off to a hot start on Tuesday with the Starter segment won by Bradley Larue.

For the second day of the competition yesterday the five chefs had two hours, with five additional minutes for plating, to prepare six portions ( five plates are needed for the judges and one for photography) of an original dish featuring the mandatory ingredients which was ISPC Vieille Maconde.

The five chefs were helped by two commis of the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA), where the competition is taking place.

The executive assistant of ISPC Seychelles Sarah Bastienne said two new contestants took part in the Main Course segment of the contest yesterday.

She added that through the competition the contestants managed to cope with the stress and were able to finish their artistic dish on time.

“The two new contestants were able to get advice from the other competitors to manage their stress. They all have amazing cooking abilities and that is why today they are in the final of the Main Course,” Ms Bastienne said.

Mr Barbe, who works at Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort & Casino as an executive sous-chef, was very thrilled to be the winner of the Main Course competition.

“I am truly blessed to be the winner of the Main Course competition. I used all my abilities gained from my work,” he said.

He added that this year is his last involvement in the culinary competition.

“This year is my last competition. I want to give the opportunity to other young and talented chefs to take part,” said Mr Barbe.

He also pointed out that he always wanted to become a chef since a very young age.

“I always dreamed of becoming a chef ever since I was very young. I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps as he also worked in the kitchen. It was just a dream at first, which has become a reality.”

The other winners in the Main Course segment of the Seychelles National Culinary Contest 2015 are Kevin William who took third place and Bradley Larue who came out second (after finishing first in the Starter segment). The two other contestants are Fabien Freminot and Tina Hoarau.

Today, for the final day of the competition, the contestants will take part in the Dessert segment with main ingredient Nespresso Ristretto Coffee.

Recipes will be judged on taste, originality and appearance. The recipes are judged by a qualified jury of five persons who also comprise international judges Lionel Rigolet and Eric Boshman.

The three final winners will each receive a flight ticket from Air Seychelles; seven nights’ stay in the 5-star hotel of the Constance Belle Mare Plage of the Constance Hotels and Resorts and €800 (R12,000) cash from Cable and Wireless.
