Senior citizens have fun at fancy dress ball |03 October 2015

Seventy senior citizens took part in a fancy dress ball that was organised to mark the International Day of Older Persons celebrated on October 1.

The ball, put together by the Association of Senior Citizens in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports, was held at the Sea Front Restaurant on Thursday evening.

The activity was graced by the presence of the Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports, Vincent Meriton, and by the social affairs principal secretary Linda William-Melanie.

The acting director general for programme development and special events in the community development department Betty-Mai sofa was pleased with the turn-out.

“Albeit of advancing age, the senior citizens showed that they still have rhythm in them,” she said.

The genres of music played at the ball included sega and kanmtole, allowing the senior citizens to relive pleasurable moments of yesteryear.

The elderly were being entertained by the band Francourt Animation.

The International Day of Older Persons is a special day for the elderly all over the world celebrated annually to recognise their contributions in society and to examine issues that affect their lives.

In our fast ageing world, older people will increasingly play a critical role - through volunteer work, transmitting experience and knowledge, helping their families with caring responsibilities.
