Bishop Wiehe to continue mandate |07 October 2015

Bishop Denis Wiehe, who has reached retirement age and has already handed his resignation, has been asked to continue his mandate in Seychelles for the moment.

The Bishop said he received news to continue his mandate during the recent CEDOI (Conférence des Evêques de l’océan Indien) held in Rodrigues from August 25to September 4, 2015.

It was during the CEDOI that he met the new Apostolic Nuncio, His Excellency Archbishop Paolo Gualtieri.

The Nuncio confirmed that Bishop Wiehe’s resignation had been received in Rome and that the authorities had asked him to continue his mandate in Seychelles for the moment.

Retirement is mandatory for Roman Catholic Bishops who have reached the age of 75 years.

The Pope in Rome who is ultimately responsible for the appointment of Diocesan Bishops receives the act of renunciation and according to each circumstance takes the appropriate action. It is the Apostolic Nuncio for each part of the worldwide church to monitor the appointment of Diocesan Bishops, in Seychelles’ case it is the Apostolic Nuncio in Madagascar.
