Seychelles cycling loses one of its brightest sparks |12 October 2015

Seychelles has lost one of its most promising talents after cyclist Peter Alphonse tragically lost his life in the early hours of yesterday morning in a road accident at Montagne Posée.

According to an official police statement the accident occurred when an 18-year-old driver of a Hyundai Tucson lost control of his vehicle and fell in a gutter.

Alphonse, who was a passenger in this car, got trapped under the vehicle and was certified dead by the doctor at the Anse Boileau health centre.

The driver of the vehicle has been detained and alcohol tests show that the level of alcohol in his body was just above the prescribed limit. Further investigations are ongoing in this ninth fatal case recorded this year.

Last year the police recorded 12 fatal cases.

Always among the top finishers during the weekend races, Alphonse constantly challenged for the top places in the overall rankings.

Alphonse, a resident of Anse Boileau, specialised in hill climbs and rode for the Life Cycle club, where he had top cyclist Ahmad Arrisol as teammate.

The social media was abuzz yesterday morning with messages of condolence and support for his friends and family, and Arrisol commented that he had ‘lost his lieutenant in cycling’.
