International Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement |12 December 2015

Seychellois Chrystold Chetty elected member of top-level body

Chrystold Chetty, former president of the Red Cross Society of Seychelles, has been elected as one of the members on the five-strong Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement.

The election to choose five National Society representatives for the Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent was held during the 32nd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, hosted between December 8-10, 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The four other members of the commission are Massimo Barra (Italian Red Cross), Eva von Oelreich (Swedish Red Cross), Greg Vickery (Australian Red Cross) and George Weber (Canadian Red Cross Society).

The Standing Commission is the trustee of the International Conference between conferences (the Movement’s highest deliberative body). It also provides strategic guidance for all components of the Movement. It is the only permanent body of the Movement which is represented by all three components of the Movement and which meets on a regular basis.

The Standing Commission consists of two members from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) – the ICRC president and the ICRC deputy director general, two from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) –  the IFRC president and the IFRC secretary general – and five elected members from the National Societies. The election for the five National Society members are held every four years at the International Conference.

Up to date, Mr Chetty has been an active, experienced humanitarian and volunteer of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement. He started 25 years ago with the setting up of the Red Cross Society of Seychelles, serving for 10 years as the National Society president. He then progressed to serve numerous leadership positions, at sub-regional level, African regional level and at the international federation level.

In serving the International Federation of the Red Cross/Red Crescent, Mr Chetty has been a member of the steering committee for the evaluation of the Strategy 2010, and took part in the work of the last two High Level Group for the Constitutional Review. As part of his Red Cross career, he has advocated strongly for capacity building of small and weaker national societies as well as volunteer and youth development.

In 2005, Mr Chetty was elected chairman of the Finance Commission of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies. During his 10-year mandate, apart from ensuring excellent financial oversight of the Federation, he highly promoted the culture of accountability and good governance. His travels on site have given him a good grasp of realities and escalating humanitarian challenges on the ground and the important role the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement has in alleviating human suffering.

As member of the African Governance Group, he continues to advocate fervently for that continent.

His extensive knowledge of the Red Cross Movement and experience in various leadership roles has surely contributed towards his being elected as member for the Standing Commission and there is no doubt that he will in all capacity deliver an excellent job, for the duration of his mandate.

The president and national committee members, secretary general, volunteers and staff of the Red Cross Society of Seychelles wholeheartedly convey their congratulations to Mr Chetty for being part of the new commission and for making Seychelles proud.
