Seychelles-China Day to be 41st feast organised by mainland China |08 February 2016

 

 

 

 

Seychelles-China Day is expected to be the 41st feast organised by mainland China as part of the Chinese government’s spring festival celebrations.

This was said by the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St Ange, during the official opening of a Chinese Bazaar on Saturday at the National Cultural Centre in Victoria. This was the last event organised to that mark this year’s Seychelles-China Day.

During the event, Minister St Ange also announced that Seychelles needs to work together with China to have the Pagoda in place as a place of worship for the Chinese.

The bazaar saw Chinese merchants selling Chinese items and a food court consisting of Chinese food.

The Confucius Institute that hold Chinese language courses at the University of Seychelles, Anse Royale, was also present. The institute is one of the masterminds behind the organisation of the Seychelles-China Day in Seychelles.

“When Confucius (a Chinese philosopher) said knowledge is important, know where you come from to better appreciate where you are, he knew that a well educated people also needed as part of their education to know exactly where his roots are from, to better appreciate what he is today.

“He said those with Chinese family names did not just happen, they came from somewhere and became Seychellois and for us to be able to better integrate all the five branches that make us who we are, we have to appreciate that there are roots to each and every one of us,” said the minister.

He added we must find ways and a means for us to remain united as this one Creole people and be an example to the world.

The minister remarked as from next year as Seychelles marks the fourth anniversary of the Seychelles-China Day, the Pagoda will be in place.

“We need to work together to put the necessary support so that the pagoda can be finished as a place of worship,” said the minister.

On his part, the Chinese chargé d’Affaires to Seychelles, Zhang Xangyang, said the bazaar and all other activities organised during the third Seychelles-China Day, promote mutual understanding and friendship

Charlie Ng Ping Cheun, chairman of the Chinese Association of Seychelles, thanked the Chinese government, department of culture, the Chinese community in Seychelles, all sponsors and supporting staff for making the bazaar a success.

He presented Minister St Ange with a token of appreciation on behalf  of the association.
