Free eye screening of school children to resume Friday |11 February 2016

A free eye screening campaign for all school children which started last year and sponsored by Lions International and Lions Club of Seychelles with the support of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health will resume on Friday at 9.30am at the Anse Etoile primary school.

The Lions Club of Seychelles has announced that it is continuing with the campaign which is aimed at detecting and correcting any problems with the children’s eyes that could eventually impair their sight and provide them with free glasses where necessary.

Parents are being urged to support their children and encourage them to have their eyes screened.

“Protecting your eyesight is one of the most important things you can do to help maintain your quality of life. School-age children may have an eye problem that, if untreated, could result in permanent vision loss,” a press release from the Lions Club said.

Before the start of the screening a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between Dr Agarwal's Eye Hospital represented here by Orbit Health Care Services Seychelles (which is based on the 1st Floor of Vasudeen complex at Lodge Street, Victoria) and Lions Club of Seychelles.

The MoU will provide for pupils detected with eye and vision problems to receive care and treatment at the hospital and optometrists from the clinic will also carry out the screening.

The first eye screening campaign was organised in May last year while the 2nd phase took place in October.  A team of highly trained optometrists from Kenya visited Seychelles to undertake the project following which 103 pupils received free glasses.

Some 3,000 pupils out of about 25,000 in the country were screened.
